Conversation with makeup artist Marina Andersson

From New York, via London, Copenhagen and back. We sat down with Swedish makeup artist Marina Andersson – renowned for her magazine features and work on the international runways in teams with Gucci Westman, Pat McGrath, and Tom Pecheux – to talk about inspiration and beauty routines.

MARINA, YOU WORK AS A MAKEUP ARTIST WITHIN THE FASHION AND BEAUTY INDUSTRY. WOULD YOU MIND SHARING THE PATH LEADING UP TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

I grew up in a small town in Sweden and moved to London straight after graduating high school. It was in London I began working as a makeup artist and I believe these years in London came to shape me a lot. This was in the mid-nineties when magazines such as The Face and I-D were dictating the style, and Britpop and indie music flourished. All of this inspired me a lot and I think it was then and there that I realised how well music, fashion, art and society are woven together.

A few years later I met my husband and we moved to New York together, and my career as a makeup artist took off. In parallel to my own career, I started assisting leading makeup artists on the international runways. Pat McGrath, Tom Pecheux, Diane Kendal, and Gucci Westman to name a few. I came to work with Tom Pecheaux ́s runway team for many years.

During the 9 years we lived in New York we got married and started a family. When returning to Sweden we ended up moving to Skåne, in the south of Sweden and I started to work a lot with YSL Beauté on shoots in Copenhagen. They soon signed me on as their National Makeup artist in Denmark, and with that title followed many exciting work opportunities. Now we are back in Stockholm and our cat Lego is the latest addition to our family.

DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL MEMORIES THAT STAND OUT?

When American Vogue assigned me, together with editor Phyllis Posnick and photographer Tim Walker to portray the legendary Vogue editor Babs Simpson, for the book The Editors Eye – that was a memorable day. And to work on the spectacular Chanel Shows in Paris with Tom Pecheaux during Karl Lagerfeld's time was always very special.

YOU MANAGE THE BLOG ‘THE BEAUTY EDIT’ – TELL US MORE!

The idea came during the years in Skåne, when the lifestyle portal Lovely Life contacted me and asked if I was interested in starting a beauty segment on their site, that they felt was missing. This was 2014 -2015. I instantly felt The Beauty Edit would be a natural extension of my work as a makeup artist. Writing is another creative outlet for me and I was attracted to yet another way to create content.

On The Beauty Edit, I share what inspires me, my life as a makeup artist, current product obsessions and all things beauty that comes my way. I try and stay updated with all new product launches, but that in itself is a full-time job.

HOW DO YOU USE 'OM-SE' IN YOUR WORK AS A MAKEUP ARTIST?

I emphasise the use of skincare and moisture before makeup application. That way I need to use less makeup.

I personally love to see skin looking as skin. Not skin covered in makeup. I always massage the model's face and tailor skincare and makeup products for each model's needs.

DO YOU HAVE A PERSONAL BEAUTY ROUTINE?

Personally, I have always put more effort on skincare than makeup. Today I am 47 years old and my skin is not as predictable as before. Shifting levels of hormones and over 25 years of testing products have made my skin develop perioral dermatitis, a stubborn skin condition.

A skin scan and analysis confirmed the routine I was already devoted to; a lot of moisture, minimal products and daily sun protection. I try to stick to a holistic way of health and beauty. For me, everything is connected. Where I put my energy, I will reap the benefits.

I have come to realise my lymphatic system needs regular upkeep for me and my skin to feel good. I dry brush, take cold baths, and IR sauna as often as I can. My daily gua sha routine is my sacred me-time, and I love how my skin feels afterwards.

WHAT BEAUTY TRENDS DO YOU SEE IN THE FUTURE?

I think Skincare, Self - Care and Sustainability that were labelled as trends before are now constants, and part of our everyday life, and we will see much more of this in the future. After lockdown and the pandemic, we were all longing for freedom, parties and colour.

I think we notice that both within fashion and beauty now. I am personally very inspired by all the colourful graphic eye makeup we saw on the runways for fall 2022. I think that is a trend we will see a lot more of.
