The Barbary fig–also known as prickly pear–is a cactus and when eaten raw, the fruits have one of the highest concentrations of vitamin C of any fruit. In Sicily, a prickly pear-flavoured liqueur called “ficodi” is served like a medicinal aperitif.
The Barbary fig oil is also a powerful source of provitamin-A (all-trans Retinoic Acid) that helps your skin produce more healthy skin cells. The stem is a bountiful source of antioxidant compounds known as polyphenols, many of which are excellent visibly reducing signs of sensitised skin.
